Staggs & Fisher's green journey began all the way back in the 80’s when we started designing our first variable air volume laboratory air system. At the time, this was not the “standard” but it was the right thing to do. Our philosophy has never been to jump on every band wagon that comes along, but rather to incorporate proven cutting-edge technology wherever appropriate. Staggs & Fisher is able to make these tough calls since we use Professional Engineers to design our projects from start to finish. House Bill 2 has been passed that requires all new construction over $25 million in the State of Kentucky to be designed at least LEED Silver. The bill also puts emphasis on the “Energy and Atmosphere” category for projects between $5M-$25M by requiring a minimum of 7 points. This means tough choices will have to be made for the building envelope and mechanical and electrical systems in order to obtain the energy savings required by this proposal, while at the same time maintaining the project’s budget.
Staggs & Fisher recently completed the design of the Bluegrass Regional Medical Center (Eastern State Hospital), which is the first State building to be designed and submitted under House Bill 2. It was designed for LEED Silver, but may obtain LEED Gold. Building Information Modeling (BIM) is being implemented as one of the design tools on this project. Staggs and Fisher uses Revit software, which employs BIM, to generate contract drawings.
The University of Louisville Clinical and Translational Research Building (Bio-Med III) has received the prestigious LEED Gold status issued by USGBC for building certification. This is the first Laboratory in the state to receive LEED certification, and among the largest of its size in the United States. The A/E team was met with an extreme challenge because of the fact that the owner did not start this project with a requirement for LEED, until after it was designed and construction was under way. Because Staggs & Fisher had designed this project for energy efficient operation (even without LEED requirements) from the beginning, it only required minor changes to become certified. Cick here to view profile featured in USGBC.
The University of Louisville Kersey Library Renovation Project has received the prestigious LEED Gold status issued by USGBC for building certification. This is a 35,000 sq. ft. major renovation of a former library into a building with classrooms, offices and computer labs.
Staggs & Fisher currently has 11 personnel that are LEED AP, nine (9) of whom are Professional Engineers:
Greg Carter , PE, LEED AP, CxA
Martha Caswell, PE, LEED AP
Rick Caswell, LEED AP, CxA
Tag Foster, PE, LEED AP, HBDP, HFDP
David Guffey, PE, LEED AP
Chris Keath, PE, LEED AP, HBDP, CxA
Greg Kraeszig, PE, LEED AP
Jenny Leitch, PE, LEED AP
John Mason, PE, LEED AP, CxA
Chris Renaud, LEED AP
Bill Wilson, PE, LEED AP
Staggs & Fisher currently has 3 Professional Engineers that were awarded the certification for High-Performance Building Design Professional (HBDP), by ASHRAE:
ASHRAE has developed the HBDP program in close collaboration with the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) and the Mechanical Contractors Association of America (MCAA) and with input from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and the Green Building Initiative (GBI). Candidates who earn the HBDP certification will have demonstrated a well-rounded understanding and knowledge of how HVAC&R design is integrated into high performing buildings to achieve the overall goal of producing a sustainable HVAC&R design.
As of May, 2010, there are only (10) HBDP’s in the state of Kentucky. Staggs and Fisher employs (3) of them, all of whom are principals of the company.
Daniel H. Bransom, P.E., HBDP, HFDP, CxA
Taggart Foster, P.E., LEED AP, HBDP, HFDP
Christopher C. Keath, P.E., LEED AP, HBDF, CxA
Staggs & Fisher currently has 2 Professional Engineers that were awarded the certification for Healthcare Facility Design Professional (HFDP), by ASHRAE:
ASHRAE has developed the Healthcare Facility Design Professional (HFDP) certification program in close collaboration with the American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE) of the American Hospital Association. Candidates who earn the HFDP certification have demonstrated a well-rounded understanding and knowledge of medical terminology and facility operations as they affect HVAC&R design in healthcare facilities.
As of May, 2010, there have only been (8) HFDP’s certifications awarded in the state of Kentucky. Two (2) of them are held by Staggs and Fisher principals.
Daniel H. Bransom, P.E., HBDP, HFDP, CxA
Taggart Foster, P.E., LEED AP, HBDP, HFDP
